Volunteers are valuable members of the team for both inpatient and outpatient clinics and units. The role varies according to the placement area, but always involves welcoming patients and their families and helping staff to keep patients informed about their appointments. Clinic and Units volunteers accompany patients to various parts of the hospital if they are undergoing multiple assessments or procedures. They also often offer patients drinks and snacks and may run errands on behalf of staff. The roles are varied and busy and no two days are the same!
Examples of our clinics and units volunteer placement areas are:
Cambridge breast unit (Macmillan oncology team)
Oncology day unit
Radiology day unit
Day surgery
Endoscopy
The role is to help patients feel less anxious and better informed during their time in hospital, working under the direct supervision of the clinical staff.
What skills do I need?
Volunteers get to know their clinical areas extremely well and become experts in knowing what needs to be done and how they can help. Some days are busier than others, so volunteers need to be adaptable, confident communicators. Volunteers are provided with a red polo shirt to wear.
All volunteers undertake two elements to mandatory training, en e learning element and a face to face session lasting four hours. The face to face sessions run twice a month.
In addition, within three months of volunteering, volunteers are required to attend Dementia awareness training.
