Hamelin Trust and Essex County Council are delivering a new project, Bfriends, for those with learning disabilities and/or autism in Chelmsford/Braintree areas.

Can you share your time, talents and interests to help others find friendship, pursue hobbies and learn new skills?

Hamelin Trust will give you all the tools you need and you can give as much or as little time as you wish.

ROLE DESCRIPTION:

Bfriends project is a 2 year pilot, a partnership between Hamelin Trust and Essex County Council. The aim of the project is to provide a community-based befriending, mentoring and peer-led service for adults with learning disability and/or autism (LD&A) in the Braintree and Chelmsford District areas of Essex.

The aims of the project are to reduce isolation and deliver personalised support to adults with LD&A that enables them to engage with their local community in a meaningful way.

This is through developing a person’s strengths, skills, knowledge, assets and aspirations alongside them using person-centred planning tools so they can maximise both what the person can do for themselves, and what they can access from others to live a meaningful life.

The roles volunteers can support in are:

1. Becoming a Befriender- a companion, a buddy (taking someone to a musical gig, or regular coffee meetings, nature walk, going to a football match etc.)

2. Becoming a Mentor: sharing skills, coaching and giving guidance.

3. Supporting Peer led activities: encouraging individuals or groups to have confidence to socially arrange activities; create their own friendships and shared interest activities or clubs.

Volunteer commitment can be flexible; one off, ad-hoc, longer and routine, or for an agreed amount of time as a mentor. Volunteers are profiled and matched to a candidate’s needs and interests.

Volunteers will be subject to a robust DBS check, receive training, regular support and supervision, and other perks which include expenses, celebratory social events, and discount cards.

Volunteers WILL NOT BE responsible for any personal care needs: This includes complex manual handling, dressing, feeding or administrating any medication. All participants will have low level needs, and already have capacity to be out in the community independently, meaning they will not have the need for one-to-one care support.

What skills do I need?

Open to people from all backgrounds and areas. It would be helpful to have experience supporting people with learning disabilities and autism , however training and support will be provided. This opportunity is for anyone who feels they have some time to share passions, skills or meaningful opportunities that could help someone's confidence and well being.
