The Art Place is an exciting gallery, workshop, artist studio, shop, and classroom where people of all backgrounds and abilities can come together to connect and express themselves through art.
The emphasis is on creating an inclusive, fun environment that supports people with mental health issues, learning disabilities, and creates opportunities for cultural exchange through art and creativity. We also run a Dementia Group on Fridays.
We need volunteers who have experience in working, volunteering, or living with mental health issues to help support our clients and instruct our other volunteers.
You would be working to make sure each session is welcoming and safe. You would be encouraging people to join in, sitting and chatting to them, helping to draw them out of their shells, to express themselves, and being alert for any concerns or problems.
You would be helping our other volunteers to learn how best to support people. And you would also be helping to mentor our volunteers who themselves have mental health needs.
What skills do I need?
A good understanding of different aspects of mental illness and health. Experience in being around people (either professionally, through volunteering, or personally) with different needs.
You must be open-minded and tolerant, and interested in learning about different cultures and experiences to your own.
Patience, kindness, and a good sense of humour is a must!
Being artistic, or creatively-minded is a plus, but no specific skill or expertise is needed.
Workshops run Monday-Saturday: 9.00 – 17.30, and on Sundays: 10.30- 16.30.
Volunteer shifts are 9am to 12noon; 12noon to 15.00; or 15.00 to 17.30.
We are based in The Meadows Shopping Centre, Chelmsford.
