Peer Support Worker for Crisis House

To support service users when in crisis, to offer both emotional and practical support during their stay at the house. To engage them in meaningful activity and support with signposting to appropriate community settings.  

 

  • To build a rapport with Service Users and to gather as much information as possible during their stay so that we can support them fully whilst here
  • To engage them in meaningful activity or group activities to increase stimulation and improve mental health and wellbeing
  • To support Service Users with skills they may have lost due to breakdown, to promote independence
  • Ensuring that people’s needs are met
  • Developing a good understanding of the needs of the person we are supporting to assist with onward referrals
  • Understanding that person’s viewpoint
  • Researching information and communicating effectively with the Service User you are supporting
  • Supporting the person to make self-referrals, appointments/meetings
  • To speak on Service User’s behalf if too distressed to communicate effectively
  • Maintaining confidentiality and boundaries, while following Thurrock and Brentwood Mind’s policy and procedure
  • To ensure that information processed for our clients is kept accurate, confidential, secure and in line with the Data Protection Act (1998) and Security and Confidentiality Policies

What skills do I need?

  •          Good people skills
  •         Good listening skills
  •          Diplomatic, emphatic, compassionate and understanding
  •          Non-judgemental
  •         Pleasant approach, calm presentation
  •          Some experience with using Microsoft Office programmes, however, this is not essential
  •          Good communication skills
  •          Reliable and good time keeping
  •          Ability to be responsible and to work within boundaries
  •          Able to work as part of a team, as well as on your own initiative
  •          Able to make positive contributions to the running of the house/shift
  •          To be able to communicate effectively if worried about a Service User’s change of presentation
  •          To be confident in reporting anything concerning to a senior member of staff on duty, (i.e., safeguarding concern)
  •          To have a positive outlook and to encourage positive interaction
  •          Committed to anti-discriminatory practice

Availability Details

The busiest times of the house are predominantly between 10:00-16:00, however, there is no minimum or maximum number of hours that we ask you to volunteer. We simply ask that you can commit to a regular time slot if possible.
