As a volunteer counsellor you will have weekly 50 minute counselling sessions with customers that have been assigned to you by the Therapeutic Lead. Sessions will be held face to face in the Happy Hub in Eastgate, Basildon. Counselling sessions can also be held over the telephone due to the current Covid-19 situation. Telephone counselling can continue to be offered when customers are unable to attend a session in person.

Your main responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

- Weekly counselling sessions with your assigned customers
- Keeping accurate records for each session in line with the counselling policy
- To escalate concerns to the Therapeutic Lead

What skills do I need?

All volunteer counsellors must be qualified, certificates to be shown before you start.

As a volunteer counsellor you will be a member of the BACP and you will work within their Ethical Framework. You will also work with the policies of Motivated Minds in regards to the Counselling Service, Safeguarding and Data Protection.

You will be an empathic listener who will be able to work with a variety of problems that our clients present with. You will have good boundaries in order to provide clients with a supportive framework to work within. You will use different counselling skills depending on the client’s individual needs.

You will be reliable and will have excellent time keeping skills as sessions need to run to time. Clients will need to know that they can depend on you to turn up each week to facilitate their counselling sessions.

You will keep accurate, brief records of your sessions which will be logged on the appropriate paperwork and sent to the Therapeutic Lead. Notes should be made on the day of the session.

You will give Motivated Minds and customers notice if you have annual leave booked, so that client expectations can be managed during a break in counselling. If you are unwell you will inform the Therapeutic Lead as soon as possible so that your clients can be notified in good time that their session will be cancelled due to unforeseen circumstances.
