Royal Gunpowder Mills is a heritage attraction with lively and engaging visitor, learning and volunteering programmes. In addition to telling the story of the most important site in Europe for the manufacture of gunpowder, areas of our historic 170 acre site are a designated Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI).
We are looking for enthusiastic visitor services volunteers to assist on our public open days.
The range of tasks are varied, and include:
• Greeting and directing customers, making them feel welcome
• Acting as guides and/or exhibition stewards
• Answering visitors questions and/or directing them to where
they might find further information
• Assisting with learning activities
• Ensuring Covid safety
• Acting as runners to ensure the smooth running of the public open day.
• There are also opportunities for volunteers to get involved with hands-on practical work helping us to get the site ready for each open day.
• Ensuring that all work is carried out in accordance with the Company’s Health and Safety Policy and other relevant policies
What skills do I need?
Ideally we seek someone:
- With the ability to project a good impression through self-presentation
and manner, providing a high quality service to visitors.
- Confident with their communication skills including, listening, observing, answering questions and providing information clearly and effectively.
- Able to work with a wide range of the public in a calm, helpful and friendly way.
- Who has an interest in heritage/nature/history/science
- With the ability and enthusiasm to keep up-to-date with information about facilities, activities and events.
- Observant and aware of the surroundings to ensure a clean, safe and secure environment.
Visitors are welcomed into our main visitor area and exhibitions and encouraged to enjoy our stunning SSSI natural environment and so this role would suit those with an interest in nature, heritage and working with the public.

Availability Details
Any public days during our open season. Mostly between 10.00am-5pm Ideally you would be willing to volunteer days (or half days) for some of RGM’s open Sundays through the summer. There is a rota for when we are open to the public. Volunteers offer their time and a rota is drawn up to best cover the tasks. Relevant training is provided.
