Volunteer Pony side walker

← Back to search results

You will be expected to walk beside a horse or pony during a physiotherapy session, when a disabled child will be seated on top of the horse or pony, receiving physiotherapy exercises.

You are there to provide a safety 'net' for the child, in case they start slipping off the horse or pony. You will be required to assist in keeping the child in their seat, whilst the horse or pony is walking around the Indoor Arena.

If you have experience in horses or ponies you will be leading and tacking up the horses and ponies. However this can be taught to anyone that is not experienced but wishes to have more contact with the horse or pony

What skills do I need?

You will need to be able to walk unaided and provide stability to children aged from 18 months to adult. This means that if the disabled person starts to fall off the horse or pony you have the strength to prevent them from falling and you can hold them on the horse or pony if they do not have the strength to do so themselves. (You will also be required to have a background check - formerly CRB - now called DBS)

If you have equine experience, that will be an added benefit as you will be aware of the dangers surrounding working with equines and you will be confident in being around them. However, this can be taught to all inexperienced Volunteers.

It would be advisable not to have severe uncontrollable equine-related allergies.
