The Gateway Project is looking for a new volunteer Supervisor/Cook who will be responsible for overseeing volunteer Cooks preparing awesome 2 course meals for the people of Halstead.

 

Duties will include menu design from weekly food donations so you’ll need a flare with ingredients and an ability to write recipes for our volunteer cooks.  Overseeing, management and support of volunteer Cooks prepping meals by weighing, measuring, and mixing ingredients, cooking meals, checking ingredients for freshness, and portioning, arranging, and garnishing the dishes. Supervisor/Cooks will also be required to ensure that the kitchen and equipment are thoroughly cleaned and maintained before and after each cook.

·       If you like to be hands on and a stickler for detail you’ll love this role. You’ll have to get down to the nitty gritty because it’ll your job to help maintain high standards of health and safety and to make sure the kitchen never runs out of ingredients.

·       You will be at the heart of kitchen operations, so you’ll know everyone and everything whilst serving our community. 

·       You will be working with our stakeholders on food donations and menu design.

·       You will be gaining experience in a supervisory role.

You will receive free training.

What skills do I need?

To be successful in this job, you will need to complete (if not already held and in date) online Food Hygiene Level 3 training and attend various other training events including Health and Safety. You will also be required to follow Environment Health Safer Food Better Business standards including all sanitation and health processes relating to Covid and other infectious diseases and ensure that the volunteer Cooks do likewise.  All training will be provided by the Gateway Project.

Prior food preparation experience and supervision is essential together with a willingness to be part of the team and to serve our community.

 

Supervisor/Cook Responsibilities:

  • Menu design using weekly, changeable donated ingredients ensuring minimal food waste.
  • Recipe creation for volunteer Cooks to prepare meals.
  • Organising the inventory, storage, and distribution of foodstuffs and supplies and out of date food destroyed.
  • Checking food storage is meeting required standards.
  • Motivation and management of 1-2 volunteer Cooks per shift to ensure they are complying with Safer Food Better Business standards.
  • On some shifts you will be required to cook.
  • Weigh, measure, mix and prepare ingredients according to recipes.
  • Steam, grill, boil, bake or fry meats, fish, vegetables, and other ingredients.
  • Check food and ingredients for freshness.
  • Check meals are cooked to required temperature.
  • Control portion costs by working out the number of portions per food batch.
  • Arrange and garnish dishes.
  • Work well under pressure and within the time limit.
  • Ensure that kitchen area, equipment and utensils are cleaned.
  • Help and inspire other kitchen staff.
  • Flexible Monday shifts operating midday – 1930hrs.

The role may involve lifting of food supplies and standing for a long time and occasional collection of food donations for which mileage will be paid.
