All you need to know about the Volunteer Activity Portal
The Volunteer Activity Portal is a system to reward and encourage volunteering through gamification, and to gather statistics on volunteering activity for the organisations that are being supported.
Anyone can sign up for it and log any volunteering hours they do. This could be volunteering activities for community organisations, such as charities, CIC’s, community groups etc., but it can also be any informal volunteering that isn’t connected to an organisation, like a local litter pick with friends/family or helping your neighbours, etc.
The Volunteer Activity Portal is totally free for volunteers and organisations, and we won’t give volunteers’ personal data to anyone else.

Achievements
As a volunteer you can work towards over 80 different achievements (across 8 categories), and each achievement has 5 levels (1 star – 5 star). You should choose the most suitable achievement for the volunteering you log, and you can work towards as many achievements as you like for different volunteering activities.
Find out more about the Achievements.
Community Star Score
For each hour of volunteering activity that you log you will increase your Community Star Score by 1 point. This is a constantly growing number fed from any volunteering you log across all categories and achievements.
Volunteer Passport
Another handy benefit is the Volunteer Passport, which is a full record of your volunteering activity, achievement progress, and Community Star Score. This is downloadable, and could be useful to demonstrate your experience, such as when looking for work or another volunteering opportunity.
Reports for Organisations
The organisations you support will benefit from reports detailing the totalled statistics gathered from all volunteers’ logged activities. This will include a calculation of Social Value Return (based on the National TOMS Framework).

The first iteration of the Volunteer Activity Portal was created by Basildon, Billericay and Wickford Council for Voluntary Service (BBW CVS) with Pipe Media as part of the Volunteer Futures project (that concluded in March 2024). Partners on the Volunteer Futures project were Creative Basildon, Trust Links, and ATF, and it was funded by the UK Government through Arts Council England.
