In 2022, the importance of technological literacy is clear. Doctors appointments may require patients to video call their GP, new healthcare technology for those with diabetes, heart conditions or high blood pressure can require individuals to navigate apps that record their vital signs, and Smart Devices like Amazon Alexa’s or Google Echo Dot’s can help vulnerable individuals preserve their independence by allowing them to turn on lights, call family members or listen to the radio without leaving their seat.

However, this technology can be intimidating for many people leaving them isolated and preventing them from accessing helpful initiatives. This is where WECan’s TEC Mate scheme comes into play!

TEC Mates is a programme designed to help individuals in Essex learn how to use digital technology.  If you, or somebody you know, could benefit from learning new digital skills email tecmates@westessexcan.org, visit their website or call: 03333 401727.

To make this possible we need volunteers who can help inspire and guide learners who may be apprehensive about using digital technology. As a TEC Mate, you could teach individuals or small groups in local digital hubs how to use devices such as phones, tablets, smart speakers and laptops. This may involve showing a learner how to research something using a search engine, complete an online form, apply for a job using the internet or connect a smart bulb to a smart speaker.

The role requires a good all-around knowledge of technology, but you do not need to be an expert. Confidence, care and a commitment to helping the learners is important, and the role will help you gain many new skills to add to future job applications or volunteering opportunities.

If you would like to become a TEC Mate apply here.
